Why I’m at Tim Hortons by Myself

I’m here, sitting in a Tim Hortons, by myself. Drinking a coffee and having a variation of a donut. I prefer apple fritters. I’m doing this in memory of my Dad.

Two years ago today, my Dad passed away.

My Dad lived in a different province from me. Whenever he came to visit, he would ask my husband, or sometimes me, to take him to Tim Hortons for a coffee and ‘donie’, as he liked to call a donut. So, I thought it would be appropriate to have a coffee and ‘donie’ at Tim’s today.

There are so many things I could say about my Dad – he had a hard life growing up, he wasn’t always the easiest person to get along with – but since his death, those things about him aren’t things that really come to mind when I remember my Dad.

Dad knew how to work hard. He was a farmer, entrepreneur, volunteer and often willing to help out a neighbor. He also knew how to play and rest. Sunday, a day set aside for rest, was very important.

Laugh was another thing Dad knew how to do. Sometimes it was silent. He would cover his face and his belly would jiggle. Other times it was out loud laughter.

Family was very important to Dad. Even though he may have complained about us and didn’t agree with all of the decisions we made, he loved us. Whether it was one family member that came to visit or all 30 something of us together, I could tell it filled my Dad’s heart.

What do you do to honour the memory of a loved one who has passed away? Do you reminisce about the good things or are your memories ones you would rather forget?

There is more I could share with you about my Dad but I will end here. Fond memories of my Dad is a beautiful thing.

  1. Yes, recalling fond memories of a loved one who has passed is a beautiful thing. I feel that particularly today because my younger sister has only a few days left on this earth. She has battled cancer for several years and is about to enter the presence of her Lord. We lived within 30 miles of each other for the past 25 years, and she had become a wonderful friend as well as a sister. How sweet to remember our time together, and how great to know that in Christ we will meet again in heaven!
    Blessings Freda.
